We have had the pleasure of being involved in some amazing projects and big jobs over 2022 (and beyond!). We wanted to take a moment and catch you up on what’s been happening with some of our projects, highlight some of our recent and ongoing jobs, and give you a better idea of what we can do here at McNeil Engineering.
Ogden Temple
When it came time for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to renovate their Ogden, Utah, Temple, our team at McNeil Engineering was hired to provide the Surveying and Civil Engineering service for the entire block surrounding the Temple – approximately 12 acres!
The Ogden Temple project was much more than a standard renovation, however. The original structures required demolition first before renovation could be started. The project included the complete renovation of all of the temple grounds in 2010, including the Temple and Tabernacle structures, after a demolition of these structures down to their foundation.
We first started by gathering survey data using Laser scanning equipment to most accurately depict the existing site conditions at the Temple and project site. We also used the Laser scanning equipment to help contour information on our images. Our team was also able to complete a colorized historical preservation at this stage with exact dimensions of the Temple and Tabernacle prior to the actual demolition of these structures, which was very important.
Once the Temple and Tabernacle structures were demolished down to the original concrete floors and foundation walls, our team was then tasked with providing the existing dimensions of each structure on site to be used for the design of the new structures without relying on any older inaccurate plans. It was a big responsibility to be trusted to work on such an important and historical building, and we are thrilled with the results.
Fairfield Township
Our large Fairfield Township project has been led by Surveying Project Manager Kent Withers. Our team at McNeil Engineering and Kent have been involved in laying the groundwork of planning Fairfield’s infrastructure changes since 2016.
Working with original documents pertaining to Fairfield Township dating back to before the Civil War, Kent was able to determine the town’s interest in the roadway as well as vacating portions of the roadway that could be unnecessary to the development. Kent also developed dedication maps for the roads not included in the original plot of land. Kent and the team undertook this arduous and careful task all in preparation for the inevitable development that is coming for the town of Fairfield.
Fairfield Mayor Brad Gurney had the following to say about the project, “Growth is coming, whether we like it or not. The only thing we can do about the inevitable growth is to plan for our future. McNeil Engineering has helped us solve many problems and through the completion of several critical projects is helping us prepare for this growth. However, we don’t want ‘good growth planning’ to be
viewed as an ‘invitation’ to developers. The challenge for us becomes keeping the balance between allowing good healthy growth to occur while preserving a small-town environment.”
Our team at McNeil Engineering has kept the thought of “balance between… good healthy growth…while preserving a small town environment” throughout the past few years as we have become the go-to contact for all of the surveying or plot of land questions for the township. We always want to keep Fairfield’s roots and ideals intact while helping prepare for the inevitable future growth.
Types of projects we do
Here at McNeil Engineering, we provide expert services in civil engineering, structural engineering, land surveying, landscape architecture, consulting and more. Through our projects at Ogden Temple and Fairfield Township, we were able to provide services in land surveying and civil engineering, along with consulting and more on these vastly important projects.
With the use of civil engineering in these projects, we were able to use design, construction, and current maintenance of structures and buildings to work to improve them. We also then ensured the structure was safe for the public to enter or use as a facility.
When we used land surveying in these projects, we helped determine features on the earth’s surface as well as measure and map plots of land. We also used our equipment, like laser scanners, to identify any hazards or potential hazards. We created maps and historical preservation data to ensure accurate data for future projects, like the renovations. We hope you were able to see the type of work we do with these projects- and the type of work we love to do.
Thanks for reading about some of our favorite projects from over the years. We aren’t done yet though.
Stay tuned for part two in our next blog post where we cover even more fun projects we had a hand in over the years and during 2022.
